Hi, I'm Liz

I'm a midwestern girl who lives in Iowa with my amazing husband, Tim and our incredible son Theodore.  I love to cook, entertain family and friends, visit unknown travel destinations, and enjoy the occasional martini.

A Weekend Update

June 18, 2013

I had a great weekend back home.  It was wonderful getting the chance to celebrate my BFF’s b-day and see my Dad for Father’s Day.

Friday night, Mal and I stopped by our 10 year reunion.  To be honest, I wasn’t planning on going but I’m really happy I did.  It was great catching up and reconnecting with old friends – some things never change.  If you have the opportunity to go back to your reunion – I highly recommend you do.  Cheers to the Class of 2003!

Saturday was a great leisure day.  It’s been so long since we’ve just lounged around the house, like back in the day.  It was great! Saturday Night, we enjoyed wine and live music at Ramsey’s Metro Market and then dinner at LAVA Latin-Asian-Fusion restaurant.   It was a great way to celebrate such a special friend.

It’s always hard to come back after a great weekend.  It’s even harder to jump right back into training after a fun weekend.  I haven’t talked much about marathon training.  It still continues – Tim and I are gearing up for the Chicago Half in July.  We had a really tough run this weekend – 7 miles in 85 degree heat.

I would say, this run might have been one of the hardest things I’ve done in my life.

Here’s a scenario.  At mile 6, I yelled to Tim – “We’re running home now right?”  He proceeded to break my heart by saying we still had to run to The Capital and THEN we could go home.  I think my exact words were, “NO! I can’t go any further.”  But you know what?  I didn’t quit.  I kept going until I crossed the fake finish line with my husband screaming encouragement the entire way.

Things I learned about conquering a hot run:

  1. Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate.

  2. Wear a visor – it really does help.

  3. Wear sunscreen (we got burned).

  4. If it’s sunny, try and run in the shade whenever possible.

  5. Hot runs are a mental game. Stay focused and don’t give up. Just keep going.

Have you been training for anything lately?  How do you get through when you feel like quitting?
